PSHE

What is Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE)?

PSHE (known as PSED in the Early Years) offers learning opportunities and experiences which enable children to learn skills to develop effective relationships, be respectful, be healthy, keep themselves safe and be confident and independent.

The aim of PSHE/PSED is for children to acquire skills so they can thrive as:

  • individuals
  • as members of their family
  • as members of a wider community

In Nursery and Reception, the PSED curriculum is enhanced using the Think Equal scheme of work. It is a programme that supports social and emotional development in the early years. It is rooted in mental health and social justice and aims to build a strong foundation for individual and societal progress. It offers a narrative based approach and is delivered flexibly at Victoria Park Infants through a collection of picture books.

Think Equal helps our children learn to:

  • Manage their own emotions and impulsive behaviours
  • Build their confidence and self-esteem
  • Have empathy and show consideration for others
  • Solve problems effectively and learn to resolve conflicts peacefully
  • Build critical thinking skills and make responsible decisions
  • Maintain healthy relationships and learn to collaborate

In Years One and Two (KS1) we follow the PSHE Association scheme of work as our basis for our PSHE learning. This is enhanced using the SEAL scheme of work which supports social and emotional development. The PSHE curriculum is designed to be a spiralling curriculum with themes that are revisited over time. The 9 themes taught across KS1 are:

  • Respecting ourselves and others
  • Families and friendships
  • Money and work
  • Safe relationships
  • Media literacy and digital resilience
  • Belonging to a community
  • Physical health and mental wellbeing
  • Growing and changing
  • Keeping safe
