Wednesday 19th March
What an active week it has been in 1G!
We have done some distance running at the juniors and some Irish dancing in our dance session (as part of St Patrick’s Day on Monday) as well as a netball session focusing on our aiming, throwing and catching skills.
Next week
I look forward to seeing you for Parent’s Evening on Wednesday 26th or Thursday 27th March.
Thursday 13th March
We have really enjoyed our science work this week. As part of British Science week 2025, we were lucky to have Rosa’s mum and Lucas’ grandad (1C) talk about how they use STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) as part of their jobs. The children were really excited to find out and have their questions answered.
We have been continuing with our work on plants and this week have been talking about the similarities and differences between different flowering plants using the vocabulary we have been learning over the last two weeks. 1G you made some great observations using your different senses and the hand lens.
We then used the flowers to make our own relief sculptures like sculptor Andy Goldsworthy. We really enjoyed looking at the different sculptures he has made and guessing what materials he used. Please ask your child about the relief sculpture they created below.
Next week
We are taking the children to the Juniors on Monday afternoon to do our own Victoria Park run (using their field). We will be back in time for the children to be collected from the Infant school as normal at the end of the day. Please make sure your child is in their PE kit (as they still have dance in the morning) and they are wearing trainers/ suitable shoes that they can run in.
Parents evening booking slots will go live at 6pm on Wednesday.
Thursday 6th March
Another lovely week in Year One. The children enjoyed wearing their own clothes or dressing up as their favourite story book character for World Book Day. They got a chance to share stories and favourite books with each other. There is also a link below for how to apply for a Blue Peter Book Badge (for those who are interested). Badge holders with a valid ID card can get free entry to over 200 Blue Peter Badge attractions, including theme parks, zoos, gardens and castles!
Over the next couple of weeks in English, we are using Traditional tales to help write our own stories. This week we wrote imaginative stories based on The Enormous Turnip. In RE we found out about why Shrove Tuesday was important to Christians and why people eat pancakes on this day. The children loved finding out about this as well as sharing which topping they liked best on their pancakes!
In Maths we have revisited our addition and subtraction work using numbers to 50. The children have really worked hard to grasp these concepts and in the maths folder you will find some games to support this work if you would like to practise at home. In Music we have been singing and moving to different types of music as part of our work on How does Music make the World a Better Place? The children have really enjoyed learning different songs to sing.
Thursday 27th February
The children have really enjoyed being back in school this week, playing with their friends 😊
We are continuing with our topic Up, Up and Away thinking about the places you can travel to. In Geography have found out about the Welsh flag, national animal and flower and looked at some famous landmarks found in Wales.
In Computing, we have been finding out how to keep safe when going on-line and when they see something they are not sure about or feel uncomfortable with, they should TAG (tell a grown-up). In science, we have been using a non-fiction book to help answer questions. We have learnt about the different parts of plants and why some plants have flowers. We have also learnt about the lifecycle of a sunflower plant and I have sent some seeds home to plant, so the children can watch them grow.
In Maths we have been continuing working with our numbers to 50, finding one more or less and comparing two numbers or pictures to say which values were greater or less than or equal to. We have also used a number line to find missing numbers in a sequence. The children used their counting back and forwards skills to practise and some of them found this tricky especially when bridging the tens number e.g. 38, 39, 40, 41, 42 etc. Please can you continue to practise counting forwards and backwards to help your child with this skill.
Next week
Don’t forget World Book Day is on Thursday. The children can wear their own comfy clothes or dress up as their favourite character. Our emphasis this World Book Day, is sharing a love of books and stories.
Monday 24th February
Welcome back to school everyone!
Just to let you know that PE this half term will continue to be on Monday’s and Friday’s and the children can come to school in their PE kit on those days. Don't forget that earrings need to be removed for PE days.
