Another great week of learning in 2 L this week! Thanks to all of the parents for a good parent’s evening. I hope it gave you a clearer understanding of what life is like in 2L and how your child is faring so far. This week we continued our work on The Great Fire of London. We built replicas of the houses that would have been around in London in 1666 and set them alight to see how the fire would have spread so quickly from one house to the next. In Maths we continued our work on Money and looked at notes as well as coins when making amounts. In Science we considered the suitability of materials for different jobs.
I have sent some lines home for children to learn for the Christmas play. I am aware that these lines won’t make sense out of context and I have told the children that their lines will not necessarily be said one after the other, that other children will be saying their lines in between. It will make more sense when they come to practice but I thought i would give them a head start on learning what they will be saying. If your child does not yet have a speaking part and would like to have something to say then they will be given every opportunity during the practices to do so.
I have added some homework onto education city - slightly delayed due to parent’s evening - I will make sure that the children have longer to complete it.
Hope you have a good weekend.
Mr Logan.

We have had a good first week back in 2L. We started work on our topic ‘The Great Fire of London’ by looking at how and where the fire started and the type of equipment people would have used to try and put out the fire.
In literacy we wrote some very descriptive bonfire night poems that were full of adjectives. In maths we looked at coins and how to make the same amount of money in different ways. We had our usual dance lesson to start the week and a PE session with Mr Shingler to end the week. We made our own stencils to create colourful firework pictures in Art too!
I hope you have a good weekend.
Thanks.

Homework
Hello, I have added a new Maths and Literacy homework to education city. I am hoping that after the teething problems last time that these activities work easily! Again, there is no need to print anything or send anything in as I will be able to see who has completed the homework on my dashboard. Thanks. Mr Logan

Homework
Hello, I have received a few emails about the literacy homework over the last few days and have logged on this morning to education city to check what has been uploaded. The homework was supposed to be an interactive task and not a pdf! I apologise if this has caused any stress! I have now made sure that the interactive homework has been added (I have left the pdf on there incase anyone wanted to finish it). Please don't feel the need to rush to complete the interactive one - I will leave it on for the holidays. All homework online should be interactive and if this happens again please let me know! Thanks, Mr Logan

We've had such a busy week in 2L! We had our class trip on the tram on Tuesday. Every single member of the class behaved really well, which helped make the trip a success. We saw the Emmeline Pankhurst statue, saw Lowry paintings in the Art Gallery and saw many of the buildings we talked about in class. A big thanks to the parent helpers who helped make the trip run smoothly! Back in class we discussed what we had seen; we wrote about the trip as well as using our experience of seeing real life Lowry paintings to inspire us to finish our own artworks. We have spent a lot of time practicing our singing for the harvest assembly next week and I hope many of you are able to come along.
This week I set homework on education city and thank you to those who have already completed the tasks. There isn't any need to send in the completed task either by email or on paper - I can see who has completed the tasks and their answers through my log-in. When I assign homework online the tasks will be available to complete from Wednesday to the following Tuesday.
I have not given out spellings this week as the children are not in next Friday and then we are on half term. I have collected the spelling books in and will keep hold of them until I give new spellings out. I will set homework tasks online next week but will leave them available to complete throughout half term until the Tuesday we return.
Thanks,
Mr Logan

**Education City**
Did you know that we have a school Education City account? Please help us to make the most of this resource. Look out for log ins in book bags/ reading records and use the search feature to explore games and activities to support phonics, maths, and science. Homework may also be assigned on Education City by your teachers so be sure to check the class pages.
Thank you! Mrs O'Connell 🙂 (Year One class teacher/ Computing subject lead)

2L have worked hard this week in all lessons! In literacy we continued to work on adjectives - imagining we were inside a Lowry painting and describing what it would sound like, feel like and what you would be able to see. In Maths we continued work on addition, practiced times tables and thought about how to tell if a shape is 2d or 3d. In Topic we discussed Harvest time and the foods that are gathered at this time of year as well as continuing work on Emmeline Pankhurst and discussing timelines. In PE we worked hard with Mr Shingler improving our throwing accuracy.
On Tuesday we will be taking our trip into the city centre on the tram. Children should come in normal school uniform and we will be providing each child with a high-vis vest to put over their coat. Please ensure that children arrive on time so that we can leave in good time. We will be back in time for lunch and the children will be provided with a snack and a drink whilst we are out.
This week I have provided children with homework on a single sheet instead of putting it into their homework folders. Could you please ensure that the homework folders are brought back into school next week so that they can be used for future homework.
I have stuck a log in for education city (https://www.educationcity.com/) into each child's reading record. This is a great resource for the school to have access to. Please log in and have a browse at the activities for Year 2 in English and Maths. On some weeks I will be adding homework on here instead of providing worksheets - I will keep you informed of when this happens.
Thanks,
Mr Logan

It's been a good week in 2L this week with lots of learning! Thank you for the homework submissions - they will all be added to a classroom display about Manchester. Some really interesting changes were noticed and I appreciate the effort and hard work the children put into it.
In Literacy we learned about Emmeline Pankhurst and the suffragettes and wrote a short biography about her life. In Maths we developed our strategies in addition with number bonds to one hundred using our number bonds to ten knowledge, and adding 3 digits together and looking for number bonds to help us do it quickly.
I have given the children a letter about a trip on the tram into Manchester. Please return the slip as soon as possible to allow us to plan the trip accordingly. I have asked that any parents who are able to volunteer let me know on the return slip. I have taken the previous two Year 2 classes on this trip and it has been a great success and really enhanced the children's learning. We will be able to see the statue of Emmeline Pankhurst, Lowry's paintings and see the city's buildings we have been looking at in photographs.
I hope you have a good weekend,
Thanks

Another week has flown by in 2L. We have worked very hard ordering numbers and counting in 2's and 3's in Maths. In Literacy we read and rewrote the story of Cinderella, paying particular attention to our descriptive language. In Art we looked at how Lowry drew buildings and attempted to imitate the style in our sketch books whilst in topic we looked at how Manchester has changed over time in a bit more detail, looking at clothes and transport from a hundred years ago. In Science we talked about what animals need to survive.
I have attached a link to the White Rose 'Minute Maths' app. It is a free resource with no log in or registration that you can work through with your child to help reinforce times tables, number bonds and addition and subtraction.

It is easy to find on an app store by searching '1 minute maths'.
I hope you have a good weekend.
Thanks

We've had such a busy week in 2L this week! We started with Dance on Monday, working on our space inspired routine. In Art we looked closely at some Lowry paintings and tried to copy his style of drawing people. In Topic we thought about how Manchester had has changed over the past 100 years and looked at photographs of the city centre from a long time ago to see what differences we could spot. On Thursday we had a visit from Stretford fire station who arrived in their fire engine! We had the opportunity to have a look at their equipment, go inside the cab and everyone had the chance to squirt the hose! Back in class we learned more about the uniforms and special outfits the firefighters have to wear and the children were able to ask questions about what the role of a firefighter was. In Science we talked about the life cycle of a human and what we can do now that we couldn't do when we were babies. In Maths we worked hard on place value and ordering numbers.
Thanks to the parents who came to the meet the teacher session, I will upload the powerpoint of the session fro those who couldnt make it.
I have provided each child with a laminated sheet of 'common exception words' and the 2, 5 and 10 times tables. The common exception words are words that the children will need to know how to spell by the end of Year 2 that can't usually be spelled using phonics. The 2 5 and 10 times tables are the times tables that children need to know by the end of Year 2. This sheet is a handy way of practising these things at home to compliment the learning we will be doing in class.
Thanks
Mr Logan

We have had a good second week of the half term in 2L. In literacy we have spent time working on phonics, writing descriptive sentences and learning about nouns. We spent time thinking of different nouns in stories we knew and I have asked the children to keep an eye out for nouns in their reading books. In Maths we continued to look at splitting numbers into tens and ones and also reminded ourselves of number bonds to 10 and how they can help us with our number bonds to 20. (3+7=10 so 13+7=20 for example). In topic we looked at where Manchester is on maps of the world, Europe and the United Kingdom and talked about the other countries in the UK and their capital cities. In Science we learned about life cycles and how the life cycle of a butterfly is very different to our life cycle.
We had great PE sessions with Mr Shingler and Kourtney too.
Just a reminder that the 'Meet the teacher' session is on Wednesday next week and I look forward to meeting those parents who can make it. Any parents who can't make it - I will share the presentation on our class page next week.
Thanks
Mr Logan
Hello and welcome to 2L! It has been a pleasure getting to know the children so far this week. We've spent time in class getting used to routines and generally settling in to Year 2 life. The class have written about their holidays and themselves and looked at different ways of partitioning numbers in Maths. We sorted animals into categories in Science and spent some time playing team building games in the hall.
In terms of books and home reading, the children's books have been given out this week and will be changed weekly. All children will have a phonics book as well as their regular reading book while we complete our school phonics scheme. Children should make sure to bring their reading folders in each day and put them in the reading slots outside of the classroom.
I have also provided children with spelling books. Every Friday I will provide the children with spellings to learn for a short spelling test on the following Friday. I will be giving out homework each week starting next week, usually given on a Wednesday to be returned the following Monday.
PE will be on Monday (Dance) and Fridays (Mr Shingler) this half term. I will be available on the playground before and after school most days if you have any queries.
I will be updating this page weekly on a Friday with news about the learning we have done in class as well as any relevant information for the following week.
Finally, my email address is JLogan@victoriaparkinf.co.uk. I will do my best to respond within 48 hours to any emails.
Thanks!
Mr Logan
