Summer 1

Friday 23rd May

What a fun and exciting week we’ve had!

We finished our space theme work this week learning all about Curiosity and Perseverance (The Mars Rovers) and looked at some recent images of Mars’ surface sent back to Earth by Curiosity. The children were really curious and able to compare how Mars is different to Earth. The children have really enjoyed our space topic this half term and it has fired their imagiantions to find out more independently at home. Great work 1G!

During the past two weeks we have completed lots of practical activities. In computing we used the ChatterPix App to animate our alien paintings we did last week and make them come ‘alive’! We hope you enjoy the results below 😊

Have a well-deserved break everybody and I will see you back in school on Monday 9th June.

Friday 16th May

What a lovely week it has been in 1G.

In maths we have been focusing on direction, pretending to be robots and making quarter, half and three-quarters turns to move objects. In English we have continued our space theme and read a book called Man on the Moon by Simon Bartram. The children have enjoyed finding out about ‘Bob’ whose job is to keep the moon clean and tidy. They also found it particularly funny that Bob didn’t realise that there are aliens hiding there! The children have produced some super writing this week asking Bob questions and even drew their own aliens in art.

The children have also used different media this week in their art lessons, to complete their space collage pictures. They worked imaginatively and the results were amazing 😊.

When the children return after the holidays, they will be completing the National Phonics Screening Check. This activity involves recognising sounds in words and reading them and is similar to the classwork and homework activities your child has had throughout the year. More information is in their reading folder and can be found on our phonics and early reading page. If your child would like additional practise with their phonics they can complete the activities under the phonics games tab on the class pages.

Thursday 8th May

Well what a busy week it has been in 1G! The Year 5’s came to visit from the Junior School and shared some of their books and stories they had made for a Year One audience. It was lovely to see some big brothers and sisters 😊. We also celebrated VE Day with a rousing sing along in the playground, proudly flying our flags.

There is no phonics homework this week as we have been continuing to practise recognising sounds in 'real' and 'nonsense' words in class. There are games for your child to practise these skills, in the phonics folder.

Next week

Don’t forget to bring your best smiles on Tuesday (and be in full school uniform), as it is class photo day (13th May) 😊.

Friday 2nd May

What a super week it has been, with a little bit of sunshine as well 😊

We have continued learning about Space, in particular finding out about the First Lunar Landing and looked at how historians use evidence (newspapers, photographs, artefacts) to learn about events and people in the past.

In English, we have been reading a new class book all about an alien who crash lands on Earth named Beegu. We thought about how she might have felt at different parts of the story and used our imaginations to think about what planet she travelled from.

In science we have been identifying materials that everyday objects are made from and grouping them accordingly. Maybe you would like to go on a Material Hunt at home and find as many different objects as you can made from the same material. I would love to see the results!

As the weather is becoming warmer, please can you check that your child’s school jumper is clearly named to prevent any mix ups and that they have their water bottle in school every day. Many thanks.

Friday 25th April

This week we used our non-fiction books to research and find out about The Solar System. The children worked in groups to make their own fact files. The children really enjoyed discussing, writing and assembling their facts to produce their group piece.

In History the children have been learning about the Space Race between Russia and The United States of America. We found out about why Laika the dog and Monkey’s Able and Baker are remembered. We look forward to continuing with this work next week. In Music we listened to Gustav Holst The Planets. We also enjoyed listening to songs about the primary and dwarf planets.

What an exciting day we had today!

This week we have begun our new topic ‘Let’s Explore!’ and we have been finding out about the solar system. Today we were lucky to have the Wonder Dome Planatarium experience, visit school (paid for by our fantastic PFTA). The children were able to experience different aspects of space, the planets, the moon landing and Mars, close up. They were fully immersed and mesmerised by what they saw. The children (and adults!) thoroughly enjoyed it and I hope they were able to tell you about it after school tonight.
