Welcome back to Victoria Park Infant School

Spring 1

Week ending Friday 14th February

We finished the half term with another well deserved golden table treat!!

For Safer Internet Day this week we had a special assembly based around the theme 'Too good to be true? Protecting yourself and others from scams online.' The children really enjoyed talking about all of the different ways we use technology at home, and how we can keep safe when using the internet. Here is a link to the parent's page for saferinternet.org and you can find a quiz to play at home below.

We also continued our DT work and made moving pictures using a lever mechanism. We designed, created, evaluated and edited our work to improve it. I love how individual they are when you look at the details!

The children have written fantastic stories inspired by 'Where the Wild Things Are'. We thought carefully about a new setting for Max to visit, as well as the way he would travel there. We focused on using capital letters and full stops in the correct places, writing a beginning, middle, and ending, and we used adjectives to make our work more interesting - well done 1C!

Please don't forget to read (and re-read) the reading books every week as they are changed on Mondays and the children need as much practise as possible. They are doing very well but the more support and practise they get in Year One the more confident they will be.

Please practise Week 6 spellings for Tuesday 25th February.

Have a good week, Mrs O'Connell x smiley

Week ending 7th February

This week we have enjoyed Health and Wellbeing Week in line with Children's Mental Health Week across the UK with the theme 'Know Yourself, Grow Yourself.'. We have focused on kindness to others as well as looking after ourselves.

We have also enjoyed making dragons for our DT lessons, learning how to use pivots and slider mechanisms. The children really enjoyed this and produced lovely work. I will photograph the rest of the dragons when they are ready.

The children are all trying really hard to learn their spellings - well done! This really helps them to use the correct spellings of 'helpful' words (sometimes known as tricky words) in their work. Please practise week 5 for Tuesday.

Next week we will be assessing the children's phonic knowledge in their reading time but please continue to bring the reading folders in and to practise reading at home as much as possible.

It was great to see so many of you at the disco on Friday!

Thank you for your continued support, Mrs O'Connell x smiley

Friday 31st January.

Please see the letter below from Mrs Gill, which contains a link to our school PE survey.

We would love you to spare a few moments to fill this in as we will receive £10 for school PE equipment on every survey that is completed & returned.

Many thanks!

Miss Ryde.

Friday 24th January

Here are some photographs of 1C learning the box step in dance on Monday.

We have been reading our class rain gauge and recording the weather for Science, answering the question Does it rain every day in January?

Here is some information if you'd like to make your own rain gauge at home.

As we have a busy timetable, here is a reminder of what to remember on each day:

Monday - PE clothes, reading books changed

Tuesday - spellings

Wednesday - library

Friday - PE clothes

(please remember earrings are not permitted in PE)

Thank you for your continued support,

Mrs O'Connell x

Friday 17th January

Firstly well done to all families for practising spellings and for supporting children in their learning! They all tried really hard in their spelling tests. Please practise week 2 for Tuesday.

We are enjoying the dance sessions with Kourtnie on Mondays.

We have been working hard to learn how to double a number in maths. We even snuck in a doubles game after our tasks were completed! If you'd like to support this at home please practise doubling 1-10, as well as number pairs to 10 and 20 (e.g. 1+9, 2+8..)

We were also the *Golden Table winners* this week!! A well deserved treat for good behaviour, hard work, using nice manners, and spreading smiles!

See you on Monday,

Mrs O'Connell x

Week ending 10th January 2025

We have started our new topic Up, Up and Away! and our Year One Newsletter will give you an overview of our learning for the half term and some ideas of how you can help at home. Please also read our Spring Term Homework folder above for an update on reading, phonics, and spellings.

This week we have read the book Up and Down by Oliver Jeffers. The children are practising writing sentences using full stops and capital letters. Here is the story for you to share at home.

Up and Down by Oliver Jeffers

We are working hard on our addition skills and practising number bonds to 10 this week. We have been using our knowledge to find number bonds to 20. For example 6+4=10, so 16+4=20. The 'Hit the Button' website provides number bonds games to support this, and please check the maths games to support at home folder (below) if you'd like to practise other maths skills at home.

We have had lots to talk about with regards to the weather this week! We are learning all about the changing seasons, and what the different weather symbols mean. There is a game on Education City called Changing Seasons that will help support this.

If you have any questions about spellings or reading, or need any support please speak to myself or Miss Ryde.

Thank you, Mrs O'Connell x

Monday 6th January 2025

Happy New Year and a big welcome back 1C! Thank you again for your gifts at the end of last term, I hope you have all had a restful break.

We have started the term off brilliantly today, lots of eager writers, mathematicians, and a very busy day!

This term, PE is on Mondays (dance with Kourtnie) and Fridays (Mr Shingler). Please see the newsletter above for more information.

Spelling books are in progress this week, look out for them in book bags towards the end of the week and I shall send home a practise sheet and more information when they are sent home. Reading books, homework, and library are back to normal this week. laugh

Many thanks for your continued support,

Mrs O'Connell x
