School Closes for Spring Half Term - 13th February 2026 at 15:00

Spring 1

Friday 13th February

For the last two weeks the children have enjoyed our class book Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak, getting to learn about the main character Max and how he felt at different parts of the story. In DT we have been making moving pictures using different mechanisms. For Safer Internet Day this week, we had a special assembly about ‘voice assistants’ and work around how to keep ourselves safe when using them.

In maths we have been continuing working with our numbers to 50, practising recognising our numbers and practically finding out how many tens and ones are in a number. There are a couple of games below to support this work.

We also got the chance to visit our old classroom this week and thoroughly enjoyed seeing Mrs Spooner and Miss Edwards again!

I hope you all have a super rest in the half term holidays and I will see you back in school on Monday 23rd February.

Miss Green

Thursday 22nd January

What an action-packed, busy week it’s been! This week we have really enjoyed our History work, learning about the Wright brothers who invented the first passenger carrying, flying machine powered by an engine. We got to watch clips of different flying inventions that were not as successful as the Wright Brothers and the children thought they were hilarious! We created our own fact file posters about what we had learnt, working as a team deciding what will be written and how it would be presented.

In Maths we have been finding the different addition and subtraction facts within 20 called fact families. We started with numbers to 10 and then extended it to working with numbers to 20. We found 8 solutions for each part whole model.

For example

13 + 4 = 17                           17 = 13 + 4

14 + 3 = 17                           17 = 14 + 3

17 – 4 = 13                           13 = 17 - 4

17 – 3 = 14                           14 = 17 - 3

The video below explains what a fact family is, if you want to continue practising at home with numbers to 20.

Fact Families

In English we have been exploring the book, Journey, part of a trilogy of books by the author Aaron Becker. The children have been enthralled by it! As it is a wordless book, it has really captivated their imaginations as they try and be detectives and work out what story the author is telling just by using the illustrations. If you have a chance to lend this book when visiting the library or it’s sequels Quest and Return, I highly recommend you should.

Friday 16th January

It’s been a lovely week in school this week 😊. We have continued with our book Up and Down in English using drama to explore the characters in more detail as well as lots of writing practising our handwriting, sentence structure and spellings.

In Science and Geography, we have been continuing with our work on the weather and seasons. We have been monitoring the daily rainfall at school (this has been very exciting!) and finding out about the hottest and coldest seasons of the year. In Music we have been listening to some classical music by composer Vivaldi on the four seasons.

Thank you to everyone who persevered with the spellings homework on Purple Mash. We are hoping we have now worked out a way to set it so it can be practised multiple times and we are hoping it will be more successful next week! Let me know if you’re still having problems.

Purple Mash – Spellings Quiz and Test

Oops! An extra note for completing the spellings homework (due Friday). Please only press the ‘hand in’ button when your child can confidently spell the words as Purple Mash will lock you out of the Quiz and test and won’t let you practise again!

Friday 9th January

We have been working hard this week enjoying our new topic, Up Up and Away! In English we have been reading the story, Up and Down by Oliver Jeffers, about a Penguin who wanted to fly and what he did to make his dream come true. The children loved this book! We have been learning how to use compound words and adjectives in our sentences as well as learning how to write questions.

In Maths we have been revisiting addition this week. The children have been practising mentally how to count on from the largest number to get their answer or using equipment such as counters to help them. We have also used our number bonds to 10 and 20 to help calculate mentally as well. These skills will be revisited throughout the year but the children might like to continue practising at home or use the games in the maths folder.

In Geography and Science, we've been learning about the weather and recognising the symbols shown on weather forecasts. We are making our own class weather station to record information about the weather over the next two weeks. If you would like to make your own rainfall gauge at home, I have put a link below.

How To Make a Rain Gauge Summer STEM Project

In PE we have been focusing on our games skills with Mr Shingler on a Friday and doing football on a Thursday, which the children thoroughly enjoyed 😊.

Homework and spellings

The phonics and reading homework remain the same, thank you for all of your support so far!

We are now trialling spellings homework through Purple Mash. Starting Monday 12th January, in your '2Do' tab, there will be a quiz (to practise the spellings as many times as you like) and also a test to complete when your child has learnt to spell the words.

It is really important that your child completes the test on Purple Mash, as new spellings will be added each week (on a Friday). At school we are continuously revisiting the words but we need your support at home as well. Please email me if you have any problems logging in.

Monday 5th January

Welcome back to school everyone and Happy New Year!

Just to let you know that PE this half term will be on Thursday’s (football) and Friday’s (games) and the children can come to school in their PE kit on those days. Don't forget that earrings need to be removed for PE days.
