Easter Holidays - School Closes 15.00 on 2nd April and Re Opens 9.00 on 20th April

Spring 2

Thursday 2nd April

What a lovely week to finish the spring term!

We have learnt all about the Christian festival of Easter, and how it is celebrated around the UK. We have also hunted for signs of spring in the playground, and written our own poems about spring using our senses. We found buds, blossom, flowers, and listened to the birds and sounds in the environment.

We have also talked about looking after the local area and the children were very enthusiastic about keeping public spaces clean and tidy and helping to protect wildlife. smiley

We also had a surprise on Monday from Mrs Walkden and our parent volunteers - an egg hunt!

There is no spelling homework over the Easter break. Please finish off any homework in reading folders, and practise reading your reading books and traditional tales (see this week's homework sheet).

I would also love to see the signs of spring that you find when you are out and about this holiday. Please send me a photograph if you see any blossom, buds, flowers that we have learnt about in class, or pollinating insects and I can use them for our spring display board. aoconnell@victoriaparkinf.co.uk

We also welcome any clean (small) cardboard boxes or tubes after the holiday for junk modelling please.

I wish you an enjoyable break (fingers crossed for the weather!) and Happy Easter to all who celebrate.

See you on Monday 20th April.

Monday 30th March

I'm sorry there has been no library turn today but I have asked the children to keep their books in their book bags in case we get chance to change them later in the week.

Thank you, Mrs O'Connell x

Thursday 26th March

Over the past few weeks we have been learning about the different countries that make up the United Kingdom. We have identified the national flowers, animals, flags, and the different places that tourists might like to visit.

In PSHE and Computing, we have continued learning how to keep safe online, and we learnt about when to use usernames or avatars, and how these are useful to protect our identities.

For homework this week, the children will bring home a game to play which involves reading words with split digraphs. You may know this as 'the magic e'.

Our next spelling tests in class will be on Monday and Tuesday next week. Thank you for your support at home.

Junk modelling

If you have any empty, clean, small cardboard boxes (no bigger than half the size of a cereal box please), or toilet/kitchen roll tubes, we can use them in our junk modelling area so please send them in this week or next week in a carrier bag. Thank you!

Reminder

Our last day in school before the Easter holiday is Thursday 2nd April.

Friday 20th March

We have been busy reading traditional tales and writing our own alternative versions. We have read Jack and the Beanstalk, The Three Little Pigs, The Enormous Turnip among others. We have now introduced our new class test Suddenly by Colin McNaughton. We predicted what the ending would be and produced some fantastic ideas.

During Science Week, we have been scientists and studied flowers closely, exploring in real life all of the parts of plants that we had been learning about over the last 3 weeks. We had a very exciting day, as straight afterwards, we took the opportunity to use our flowers to make relief sculptures in the style of Andy Goldsworthy, what brilliant artists!

In Maths we have been learning about non-standard and standard units of measure (centimetres), and comparing longer/shorter and taller/shorter objects. We are now learning numbers between 50-100 and revising place value and tens and ones. We are also practising our number bonds to 10 and 20.

This week I have sent home a spellings update so you can see your child's progress. The spellings work through helpful words, as well as days of the week, numbers to 20, and then words that follow our phonics sounds. This is why some weeks will seem easier than others. Thank you for your support at home.

We hope you had a lovely Mother's Day, and Eid Mubarak to all who celebrate!

Love, Mrs O'Connell xlaugh

Thursday 5th March.

We settled down to lots of wonderful stories today, we talked about our favourite books and why we like them. The children dressed in comfy clothes and some even dressed up as book characters.

Miss Ryde.

Wednesday 4th March

REMINDER

Thursday 5th March is World Book Day.

We are inviting the children to 'come into school in your comfies'.

The children (and staff) can come into school in any clothes that they can sit comfortably in, ready for lots of stories with their class and year group.  It will be a day of staff and children sharing their favourite stories together, in school and the children will bring a book voucher home at the end of the day.

Thursday 26th February

Welcome back everyone!

Here is our newsletter so you can see what we have planned for this half term.

This week the children have enjoyed learning about plants and their parts and functions. We have learnt new vocabulary such as nectar, pollen, attract, pollinate, and reproduce. At home, your child may ask what part of the plant you are eating if it is a fruit or vegetable. Here is an example of what we have learnt.

In Maths we have practised our numbers to 50 and place value. We have been drawing how many tens and ones are in numbers to 50, as well as answering word problems. E.g. The number I am thinking of has 3 tens and if I add one more it makes 36.

Spellings

This week, your child will bring a look - say - cover - write - check sheet home. Please use it to help them write their spellings down. This sheet does not need to be returned to school.

The quiz and test on Purple Mash are still there for additional practise. I will check the children's spellings in class regularly and they will earn superstar tokens and stickers when they have written them in class.

There are also games you can play at home to learn them. Here is a bank of ideas.

The spellings work through our phonics scheme Floppy's Phonics helpful words (words that are hard to sound out, also known as sight words or tricky words), days of the week, numbers to 20, and then words that follow our phonics learning. This is why some weeks will seem easier than others.

Please email me if you have any questions, or need any support.
