Welcome back to Victoria Park Infant School

Autumn 2

Monday 1st December

What a fantastic week of learning last week 1G!

We have continued with our musical Mondays. We had a visit from Mike, who played a range of stringed instruments and taught the Year Two’s how to use a ukulele. The children have continued to practise some Christmas songs in preparation for the Christmas activities with Mrs Walkden.

The children have been historians this week investigating different objects used in homes long ago. They were detectives and had to see if they could work out what the items were and how they were used. There were lots of interesting suggestions but the answers were finally revealed!

We have started our rehearsals for our Christmas singing celebration and I’ve put a note in your child’s reading record about what clothes they need to bring in for it. An email was also sent out last week.

We had our last PE sessions (for this term) with the coaches this week and all of them commented on how much the children have improved since September.  Well done 1G!

Thursday 20th November

What a super week we have all had!

In English we have been using the book Peace at Last by Jill Murphy and using drama to explore the characters. In our writing we have been sequencing the story, writing sentences independently and using our imaginations to guess what the characters might be thinking about.

In Science we have been continuing to look at the weather and changing seasons and how animals adapt to them through hibernation. In Maths we have been finding out about 2D shapes. In History, we have been comparing homes from 100 years ago to those we live in today and learning about how to the different rooms were used.

We have continued with our musical Mondays. This week we had a visit from Karen, Freya’s grandma in Reception who accompanied us on the guitar as we sang different songs. The children have also enjoyed practising some Christmas songs in preparation for the Christmas activities with Mrs Walkden.

Friday 14th November

Another super week of learning in 1G!

On Monday there were lots of bright colours and patterns in the classroom, as we all wore odd socks to school, as part of national anti-bullying week. We have continued with this work in our PSHE lessons focusing on friendships, learning how to talk to each other respectfully and how to recognise different kinds of behaviour. The children really enjoyed our discussions and role play sessions.

We were also lucky to have Mr and Mrs Borkin visit us in assembly on Monday, introducing the children to different stringed instruments and the joy of listening to some live music.

Over the past two weeks in maths, we have been learning to add and subtract using practical objects to help us such as, pictures, 10 frames, number lines or cubes. We've also learnt how to complete these calculations mentally by counting on or counting back. There are some games in the maths folder if you want to continue practising at home and it will be helpful if your child practised counting forwards and backwards starting from any number to 20.

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who were able to attend parents evening this week. It was lovely to chat with you and be able to show you your child’s work. I hope you are as proud of their achievements as I am.

Thursday 6th November

Welcome back! I hope you all had a lovely half term break. This week we have done some super poetry using our poem, In a Dark, Dark Wood. The children have learnt the poem off by heart and used it to make their own poems which they performed to the class and wrote in their books. They had some fantastic ideas and worked hard on their handwriting and spelling. Well done 1G!

In maths we have been adding two numbers together and learning different ways of doing this, either using objects (counters), number lines or mentally counting on using fingers. The children have practised hard this week remembering to start in the right place/ get out the correct number of objects before adding them up!

In history we found out why fireworks are used to celebrate bonfire night and we have talked about how to keep safe near fire and fireworks and made some posters to help us remember. We also learnt about Remembrance Sunday and found about why people wear poppies at this time of year.

Thank you to everyone who has contributed to the Y1 fund so far. We have been able to buy some new toys and books for the classroom. The link can be found on parent pay, if you haven't already seen it.

Next Week

On Monday as part of National Anti-Bullying week, the children (and teachers) are wearing odd socks!

I look forward to seeing you on Wednesday or Thursday for Parents' Evening.

We are commencing using the library again next week after its recent audit and revamp. It is looking very inviting, thanks to the dedication and hard work of our volunteers. Our library day has now changed to FRIDAY.

Monday 4th November

Welcome back to school everyone!

Just to let you know that PE this half term will be on Tuesday’s and Friday’s and the children can come to school in their PE kit on those days. Don't forget that earrings need to be removed for PE days.
