Welcome back to Victoria Park Infant School

Spring 1

Thursday 13th February

For the last two weeks the children have enjoyed our class book Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak, getting to learn about the main character Max and how he felt at different parts of the story. We have done lots of descriptive work including making our own wild things and writing our own adventure stories! In Music we have been using body percussion to perform our own group sequences to an audience, which Mrs Walkden thoroughly enjoyed! In DT we have been making more moving pictures, this time using a lever mechanism.

In maths we have been continuing working with our numbers to 50, practising recognising our numbers and practically finding out how many tens and ones are in a number. There are a couple of games below to support this work.

The children have been enjoying their dance sessions with Kourtnie this half-term, slowly building up a dance sequence over the last six weeks about going on a journey into space! We did our final performance this week. Super dancing everybody 😊

For Safer Internet Day this week, we had a special assembly based around the theme ‘Too good to be true? Protecting yourself and others from scams online‘. The children really enjoyed talking about all of the different ways we use technology at home, and how we can keep safe when using the internet. Here is a link to the parent's page for saferinternet.org and you can also find an interactive quiz on the page to play at home.

Finally, I just wanted to say what a fantastic start the children have made to learning their weekly spellings and thank you for your continued support.

I hope you all have a super rest in the half term holidays and I will see you back in school on Monday 24th February.

Tuesday 11th February

The children enjoyed the multi-skills trip to Stretford Leisure centre this morning. They listened well to the coaches and played a range of different games (as you will see below). They all enjoyed the experience of taking part, particularly as it involved a ride on a mini-bus! Other visitors commented on their excellent behaviour and good listening skills. Well done 1G 😊.

Friday 7th February

It has been an exciting week in school this we. We were joint Golden table winners on Wednesday and enjoyed a special lunch with Mrs Walkden 😊.

There has been lots of exciting things going on in class as well this week. In DT we have been making moving pictures using a pivot and slider mechanism. I have put some photo’s below of the children from this week.

As part of our Health and Well-Being Week we have been recognising emotions and thinking of ways to stay calm. We have also been using stories to help understand what things make us feel happy inside and how our behaviour affects others.

We have continued learning about the history of aviation this week, learning about Amy Johnson who flew solo to Australia. We looked at a video extract of her arrival in Australia and also thought about how difficult or scary it must have been to make the journey.

In maths we have started working with numbers to 50. We've counted backwards and forwards, putting objects into groups of ten to make them easier to count. You may like to practise counting in tens with your child as well as practising counting backwards (eg start at 25 and count back to 9. What number do you land on?) to help with their fluency and confidence.

Next week

We have our class multi-skills trip on TUESDAY. The children need to come to school wearing their PE kit and bring a drink/ snack with them.

There will be no PE on Friday (just this week only) so children can come to school in their uniform.

Friday 31st January

Hello everybody, there has been lots of learning in 1G this week.

In History the children have enjoyed continuing to learn about the Pioneers of aviation who have led the way for us being able to travel to worldwide destinations from Manchester Airport. We learnt about local heroes John Alcock and Arthur Brown who made the first non-stop transatlantic flight.

In English we have continued with our book Journey and the children have been working hard on improving the neatness of their handwriting as well as writing sentences using the conjunction and. In maths we have been comparing different amounts of weight and putting them in order from heaviest to lightest, lightest to heaviest.

This week we have also found out about Chinese New Year, learning about how is it celebrated by families and watched a video from a previous year showing Manchester’s Dragon Parade.

Finally, a plea from Mrs Gill our PE subject lead. The letter below outlines how you can help raise money for school by completing a short school PE survey. Please could you spare a few moments to fill this in as we will receive £10 for school PE equipment on every survey that is completed and returned.

Many thanks!

Friday 24th January

What an action-packed, busy week it’s been! This week we have really enjoyed our History work, learning about the Wright brothers who invented the first passenger carrying, flying machine powered by an engine. We got to watch clips of different flying inventions that were not as successful as the Wright Brothers and the children thought they were hilarious! We created our own fact file posters about what we had learnt, working as a team deciding what will be written and how it would be presented.

In Maths we have been finding the different addition and subtraction facts within 20 called fact families. We started with numbers to 10 and then extended it to working with numbers to 20. We found 8 solutions for each part whole model.

For example

13 + 4 = 17                           17 = 13 + 4

14 + 3 = 17                           17 = 14 + 3

17 – 4 = 13                           13 = 17 - 4

17 – 3 = 14                           14 = 17 - 3

The video below explains what a fact family is, if you want to continue practising at home with numbers to 20.

Fact Families

In English we have been exploring the book, Journey, part of a trilogy of books by the author Aaron Becker. The children have been enthralled by it! As it is a wordless book, it has really captivated their imaginations as they try and be detectives and work out what story the author is telling just by using the illustrations. If you have a chance to lend this book when visiting the library or it’s sequels Quest and Return, I highly recommend you should.

Friday 10th January

We have been working hard this week enjoying our new topic, Up Up and Away!

In English we have been reading the story, Up and Down by Oliver Jeffers, about a Penguin who wanted to fly and what he did to make his dream come true. The children loved this book! We have been learning how to use compound words and adjectives in our sentences as well as learning how to write questions.

In Maths we have been revisiting addition this week. The children have been practising mentally how to count on from the largest number to get their answer or using equipment such as counters to help them. We have also used our number bonds to 10 and 20 to help calculate mentally as well. These skills will be revisited throughout the year but the children might like to continue practising at home or use the games in the practise folder.

In Geography and Science, we've been learning about the weather and recognising the symbol shown on weather forecasts. We are making our own class weather station to record information about the weather over the next two weeks. If you would like to make your own rainfall gauge at home, we have put a link below.

How To... Build A Rain Gauge

In PE we have been focusing on our ball skills with Mr Shingler on a Friday and doing dance on a Monday, which the children thoroughly enjoyed 😊

Monday 6th January

Welcome back to school everyone!

Just to let you know that PE this half term will be on Monday’s and Friday’s (starting Monday 6th January) and the children can come to school in their PE kit on those days. Don't forget that earrings need to be removed for PE days.
