Easter Holidays - School Closes 15.00 on 2nd April and Re Opens 9.00 on 20th April

Spring 2

Thursday 2nd April

What a lovely way to end the final week of term with such lovely sunny weather. In science this week we have been investigating the school grounds looking for signs of Spring. We used this knowledge to write about the effect the different seasons have on deciduous trees and wrote some Spring poems in English. As part of our follow up work, we also talked about the effect litter has on the local area and thought of ways we could help to reduce it.

I just wanted to say thank you to all the children (and parents) for the tremendous effort the children have put into learning their spellings this term. It makes such a difference to their writing. We will continue with the spellings after the holidays so I have kept the books so they can be updated. They will be given out again after the holidays.

Have a well-deserved break and I will see you back in school on Monday 20th April.

Friday 27th March

What a super week it’s been in 1G!

In Art the children have looked at paintings of sunflowers by Vincent Van Gogh and Paul Gauguin and how the different artists interpreted the same real-life objects. In maths we have started working with numbers to 100, finding missing numbers in a sequence and counting in 10’s. we have done lots of number work this week, concentrating on counting back from any number as well as consolidating how to split numbers into tens and ones e.g. 38 = 30 + 8. There are lots of games in the maths folder to support this work if you would like to continue this at home. In phonics we have been concentrating on consolidating the sounds we already know and working on how to spot these accurately in words. I have sent some games as homework to consolidate this work.

Don’t forget it’s Stretfest 2026 this weekend!

Next week

Just a reminder that spelling tests will be on Thursday.

Friday 13th March

It’s been a lovely week of learning this week and we have really enjoyed our science work. As part of British Science week 2026, we have been answering questions about how things work and investigating the differences between flowering plants.

We then used the flowers to make our own relief sculptures like sculptor Andy Goldsworthy. We really enjoyed looking at the different sculptures he has made and guessing what materials he used. Please ask your child about the relief sculpture they created below.

Over the past few weeks, we have been learning about the different countries that make up the United Kingdom. We have identified the national flowers, musical instruments and animals as well as learnt about the different places tourists may like to visit. In PSHE and computing, we have continued learning about how to keep safe when working online and learnt about when to use user names or avatars and how these are useful to protect our identities.

Friday 6th March

Another lovely week in Year One. The children enjoyed wearing their own clothes or dressing up for World Book Day. We did lots of quizzes and guessing games about stories, as well as talking about our favourite stories. There is also a link below for how to apply for a Blue Peter Book Badge (for those who are interested). Badge holders with a valid ID card can get free entry to over 200 Blue Peter Badge attractions, including theme parks, zoos, gardens and castles!

Over the next couple of weeks in English, we are using Traditional tales to help write our own stories. This week we wrote imaginative stories based on The Gingerbread Man. In Computing, we have been finding out how to keep safe when going on-line and when they see something they are not sure about or feel uncomfortable with, they should TAG (tell a grown-up).

In Maths we have revisited our addition and subtraction work using numbers to 50. The children have really worked hard to grasp these concepts and in the maths folder you will find some games to support this work if you would like to practise at home. In PE we have continued refining our football and ball skills, including aiming at targets.

Next week

As part of the national celebration of British Science Week, The Trafford Centre has been taken over by the Funlab this weekend, offering some  free activities. More information can be found in the link below.

Friday 27th February

The children have really enjoyed being back in school this week, playing with their friends 😊

We are continuing with our topic Up, Up and Away thinking about the places you can travel to. In Geography have found out about the Welsh flag, national animal and flower and looked at some famous landmarks found in Wales.

In science, we have been using a non-fiction book to help answer questions. We have learnt about the different parts of plants and why some plants have flowers. We have also learnt about the lifecycle of a sunflower plant and I have sent some seeds home to plant, so the children can watch them grow.

In Maths we have been continuing working with our numbers to 50, finding one more or less and comparing two numbers or pictures to say which values were greater or less than or equal to. We have also used a number line to find missing numbers in a sequence. The children used their counting back and forwards skills to practise and some of them found this tricky especially when bridging the tens number e.g. 38, 39, 40, 41, 42 etc. Please can you continue to practise counting forwards and backwards to help your child with this skill.

We are now continuing to do our spellings for homework. I have sent home a red spellings book and a practise sheet, with your child’s spelling list to be learnt this week and there will be a spelling test next week in school on Friday. I will return the books next Friday so you can see how your child has done.

Next week

Don’t forget World Book Day is on Thursday. The children can wear their own comfy clothes. Our emphasis this World Book Day, is sharing a love of books and stories as part of the National Year of Reading.

Monday 23rd February

Welcome back to school everyone!

Just to let you know that PE this half term will be on Thursday’s and Friday’s and the children can come to school in their PE kits on those days. Don’t forget that earrings need to be removed for PE days.
