Thursday 16th July
This week I have collected in reading books and library books. Please send any in with your child if they are still at home.
We have been busy learning about where food comes from, and which part of the vegetable plants we eat. We even had a treat and tasted some cucumber, watermelon and strawberries which went down very well!
Thank you to everyone who has donated to the Year One fund as we wouldn't be able to give the children class treats without it.
We have learnt to tell the time to the hour, and half past the hour. I have set an (optional) 2Do on Purple Mash for the children to design their own clock.
We have also done some AMAZING writing and planned and written stories based on Little Red and the Very Hungry Lion/ Little Red Riding Hood. Some very scary carnivores featured in them, and some very imaginative escape tactics! You will be able to see all of your child's hard work when the exercise books are sent home next week.
We also have some new safari animal themed toys in class which have been popular!
Please see Mrs Walkden's email from today for more information about next week.
Enjoy the weekend,
Mrs O'Connell

Wednesday 8th July
What a great Sports Day we had yesterday! The children enjoyed it and everyone was a superstar – trying their hardest, enjoying themselves, and cheering each other on! I'm so proud of everybody!
At the moment in 1C, we are enjoying reading Little Red and the Very Hungry Lion in our English lessons. We have been practising sentence writing, using adjectives, because, and accurate punctuation. Here are some photographs of our paired work this week.
In Maths we have been learning all about money, recognising coins and notes.
In Science we have been sorting animals into animal groups; mammals, birds, reptiles, fish and amphibians!
In Health and Wellbeing, we have continued learning about how to keep safe in different situations. This week we are focussing on how to cross the road safely.
We have also been busy in art, working on collage silhouette paintings, I can’t wait for you to see those!
Here are some photographs the children have taken this week for you to see.
Next week, we will collect in our library books, reading books, and complete our final spelling test for Year 1
Exciting news! Tomorrow, the children will visit their new Year 2 classroom and speak to their new teacher who is Mr Logan! They are all very excited to find out about Year 2 and they will have another visit to his classroom next week.
I have told Mr Logan (and the children) what a brilliant, supportive, hardworking, kind group of children they are. The last day for the children will be Friday 24th July (but let’s not talk about that yet!)![]()
Have a brilliant rest of your week, and I will see you at the summer fair on Sunday.

Don't forget tomorrow is INSET day (staff only).
Please continue to regularly hear your child read at home, and practise spellings as much as possible.

Wednesday 24th June
What a warm week we are having! Thank you for sending your children into school with sun hats, pre-applied suncream, and water bottles. We are keeping them inside (or in the shade when outside) as much as possible.
We really enjoyed our fundraising event on Monday! The children took part in so many fun events, and we are so grateful for all of the sponsor money. The photographs taken by Mrs Gill will be uploaded soon.

Thursday 18th June
In Science this week we have investigated different types of animals and how they can be sorted into the groups carnivores, herbivores, and omnivores. We were sent some poo* samples from the zoo to investigate, here are some photographs.
*I tried to trick the children, it wasn't really poo!
Next week
As it is our fundraising event on Monday 22nd June, children can wear sports kits, bright t-shirts or football tops with comfortable bottoms e.g. leggings or jogging bottoms to celebrate the day (whatever is comfortable).
PE will continue as normal on Friday.
Please return library books ready to swap on Monday, and keep practising spellings and reading at home.
Thank you for your continued support,

Monday 15th June
Today we have enjoyed our much anticipated trip to Blackpool Zoo. The children behaved beautifully and thoroughly enjoyed it! We spotted lots of African animals; elephants, lions, giraffes, zebra, ostrich and sitatunga. (We also couldn't resist a sneaky peak at some of the other animals that don't usually live in Africa!) The children will have lots to tell you tonight! Here are some photographs of our amazing day!

Thursday 11th June
Welcome back to school everyone! I hope you all had a restful break. I have enjoyed hearing about what exciting things everyone got up to.
We've had a great start to the week! We have completed the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check and the children worked so hard, I am proud of each and every one of them.
We have introduced our topic Let's Explore... Kenya! and the children have already found out facts about African animals using non fiction texts. Our curriculum update is below so you can read all about our plans for this half term.... We are VERY excited for our trip next week, and we have talked about how to stay safe in unfamiliar environments.
On Monday, please ensure your child is wearing their uniform, and please ensure they have a packed lunch (in a named carrier bag) and a disposable water bottle. We won't be able to carry around lots of lunch boxes or our usual water bottles so please send disposable ones.
We are hoping for good weather so if it is very sunny, please apply suncream to your child before they come to school, and if it is forecast rain, don't forget to send them with a coat. I will be checking the weather the day before with my fingers crossed!
Here is a social story from Blackpool Zoo to show to your child if this environment will be new to them.
In Maths this week we have been recognising odd and even numbers, as well as counting in 2s, 5s, and 10s. We have been reading and solving word problems using addition and subtraction.
Please practise counting in 2s, 5s and 10s with your child at home, and solving questions such as "I have 3 groups of 10, how many do I have altogether".
Spellings will now be tested weekly on a Wednesday in school until the end of term. Please use the look, cover, write, check which is sent home on a Friday to practise the spellings with your child. The words will still be uploaded onto Purple Mash on a Friday - this is not compulsory but it is there to encourage and help your child to practise in a different way, and for them to test themselves. ![]()
Please don't hesitate to ask us if you have any other queries.
Thank you for your continued support,

Summer 2
I look forward to welcoming 1C back on Monday 8th June at 9am.
Here is our curriculum newsletter so you can find out about what we have planned.
Starting on 8th June, our PE days this half term will be Monday and Friday. The children can come into school wearing their PE kit on those days.
Also, don't forget Friday 3rd July is our transition INSET day so school will be closed for the children on that day.
