Friday 8th May
What a super week it has been!
We have continued learning about Space, in particular finding out about the First Lunar Landing and looked at how historians use evidence (newspapers, photographs, artefacts) to learn about events and people in the past.
The children have also used different media this week in their art lessons, to complete their space collage pictures. They worked imaginatively and the results were amazing 😊.
The children have continued being science detectives sorting materials according to their different properties.
Finally, I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who was able to attend parent’s evening this week. It was lovely to chat with you and be able to show you your child’s books and share the great progress they have made in Year One. I hope you are as proud of their achievements as I am.
Friday 1st May
What an exciting week it's been this week!
On Wednesday we were lucky to have the Wonder Dome Planetarium experience, visit school. The children were able to learn about different aspects of space, including the Planets in our Solar System, the Moon Landings and learnt about Artemis 2, close up. Thank you for your donations towards the cost of the visit. The children (and adults!) thoroughly enjoyed it and I hope they were able to tell you about it after school.
In History the children have been learning about the Space Race between Russia and The United States of America. We found out about why Laika the dog and Monkey’s Able and Baker are remembered. In English, we have been reading a new class book all about an alien who crash lands on Earth named Beegu. We thought about how she might have felt at different parts of the story and used our imaginations to think about what planet she travelled from.
In science we have been identifying materials that everyday objects are made from and grouping them accordingly. Maybe you would like to go on a Material Hunt at home and find as many different objects as you can made from the same material. I would love to see the results!
Friday 24th April
What a great first week back it has been and with a little bit of sunshine as well 😊. This week we have begun our new topic ‘Let’s Explore!’ and we used our non-fiction books to research and find out about The Solar System and how astronauts can survive in space. The children have been excited to find out lots of different facts about the planets and have been eager to share them with each other. We also enjoyed listening to songs about the primary and dwarf planets (links below).
In Music we listened to extracts from Gustav Holst The Planets and talked about which parts we liked. We also used this music in our Dance lessons, pretending to be dust storms on Mars and moving like Mars’ moons Phobos and Deimos. We worked well in our groups.
In History the children have learnt about why the work of Galileo was important for space exploration as well as learning about The Lovell Telescope at Jodrell Bank. The children are eager to continue with this work next week.
In maths we have been finding out how to recognise half of a shape, object or amount. This week’s homework supports this learning.
As the weather is becoming warmer, please can you check that your child’s school jumper is clearly named to prevent any mix ups and that they have their water bottle in school every day. Many thanks.
Monday 20th April
Welcome back to school everyone!
Just to let you know that PE this half term will be on Tuesday’s (gymnastics) and Friday’s (dance) and the children can come to school in their PE kits on those days.
Spelling books will be sent home today with new spelling lists ready to be tested on Friday. Everyone has put in an amazing effoert in the last half term, well done!
